Smarties in Canada are different from Smarties in the United States. Canadian smarties are oval shaped pieces of chocolate coated by a layer of candy (similar to M&Ms;), whereas American smarties are chalky, stackable candy in plastic wrappers. One pronounced difference between Canadian Smarties and M&Ms; is that the former’s shell is thicker and crunchier. In addition, the flavor of Canadian Smarties have a slight cinnamon-graham cracker taste to it whereas M&Ms; have a more pronounced chocolate taste. Canadian Smarties are the original form of Smarties. The Smarties marketed in the United States are sold in Canada as well but under the name of “Rockets.” Smarties has influenced its own culture in Canada through a catchy song from their marketing. The song lyrics go "When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the red ones last…”, and its now common for people to eat the red smarties last.
