The Kinder Surprise is a chocolate egg introduced in 1972 by Ferrero. The chocolate egg itself consists of a milk chocolate layer with layer of white chocolate directly under it. The egg is hollow inside except for plastic parts, packaged within a plastic container, that can be assembled to make a toy. Originally marketed towards children, Kinder Surprises are also popular with adults who collect the toys inside. Due to the 1938 Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act which prevents "non-nutritive" items in confections, the Kinder Surprise is banned in the United States but are available in Canada.
