Chappies are a South African bubble gum that was first introduced in the late 1940s. Chappies grew to be so popular that the name Chappies allegedly became synonymous with the word “Gum.” Part of the reason Chappies gained its popularity was due to its business model. Where it’s competitors would sell their gum for 1c per piece, while Chappies sold its gum at 1c for two pieces. Because shopkeepers at the time would often give gum as change, this led to Chappies gaining value as a form of “currency.” Another innovation they employed was adding a “Did You Know?” section inside their wrappers, which provided fun facts and trivia and was popular with customers. By the late 1970s, Chappies held a 90% market share in South Africa.
